A True Hollywood Story…

When I was a kid, and my dad worked at WBZ-TV in Boston, there were just the
"Big Three" networks, and television was tightly controlled by a few powerful corporations. The industry had changed drastically by the time I started at Boston College but, even with the proliferation of cable networks and new channels, the average consumer had no real access to TV or the media. Television was still a mass medium, where the media power brokers dictated programming to the masses, as in, all the rest of us! |
I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get a job in television, and eventually I worked my way up through the ranks at TV networks in Hollywood. In fact,
I'll never forget my first big video shoot. I had landed a job at E! Entertainment Television, and I had to produce a shoot at the Beverly Hills Hotel with
E!'s Greg Kinnear. (Before he was a movie star!) At the time, it took thousands of dollars worth of equipment and resources to produce video, and TV was still a pretty exclusive club.
Then, along came the Internet, and high-speed Internet access and a little video website called YouTube – and a revolution was born! Suddenly, television and video were available to anyone and everyone with a camcorder and Internet access. Even the big TV networks took notice, as
"user-generated content" became a new buzz word for the industry. In fact, so much power has shifted from the
"big media" to us regular folks, that TIME Magazine named YOU their Person of the Year!
